Bollywood is a term compounded from "Bombay" (now Mumbai) and Hollywood. Bollywood dance is the movement form used in Indian films - a unique and energetic style inspired by Indian folk dance and Indian classical dance, Middle Eastern, and modern dance. Explore how each of these unique styles combine to create modern Bollywood dance. Learn the fundamental movements, gestures, and expressions that create the Bollywood dance aesthetic, and how they are applied in choreographed sequences.

In this course, we will explore the ongoing evolution of these societies as they deal with the novel opportunities and challenges of globalization in the 21st century. We will also investigate how modern Muslim identities emerge from a complex interplay between religion, culture, and politics. This course fulfills elective requirements for the Religion, Global Studies, and Asian Studies majors or minors.

In this course, we examine gender inequality at the intersection of labor and marriage markets in contemporary East Asian countries, mainly China, Japan and South Korea. The topics include the persistent or worsening gender gap in employment and earnings, discrimination against women at workplaces, the impact of demographic changes on marriage market and family obligations, and the discriminatory terms such as ““leftover” “Christmas cake” that push many professional women into the dilemma to choose between career and marriage. This course is an approved elective for the Sociology, Sociology & Anthropology, Asian Studies and Women, Gender & Sexuality Studies majors and minors.

This course examines the influences the Japanese language has given to and received from outside of Japan through history. The topics include, but are not limited to the influence of the Chinese language on the Japanese writing system in the 6~7th century, the language politics during the colonial period, and the Japanese language as a soft commodity in the late 20th and early 21st centuries.Taught in English.
